Question: How can we tell a powerful story while staying true to the evidence?
Outcome: A checked five-part story-and-evidence plan, ready for production.
Suggested split: START 5; story purpose 5; story/evidence 15; unknowns 5; final check 10. Reserve 5–10 minutes in a normal period for settling, transitions and the corrections the final check produces.
- Students bring FIND, CHECK, COMPARE, their three-moment story plan and sources.
- Include UNDERSTAND work when completed.
- Print the two-page DRAFT worksheet and prepare the two textile-factory examples.
- Decide which CREATE choices are realistic without letting the format drive the historical argument.
Keep the same interpretation. Do not restart research or ask AI to invent a story.
- A good story can still be bad history · 5 min. Compare the sparse supported factory statement with the dramatic unsupported version. Draw out invented feelings, migration wishes and private thoughts. Even the simple claim still needs evidence.
- Your story has one job · 5 min. Return to the COMPARE claim. Check that every group can explain the historical idea before production. The medium serves the interpretation.
- Build story and evidence together · 15 min. Use five rows: What happens? / What supports this? / Can we say it? Ask “How do you know?” and require the relevant passage or detail, not only a source title.
- Handle WE DON’T KNOW · 5 min. Teach three responses: leave it out; show the uncertainty; make a supported inference visible. “May have” still needs a reason.
- Final check · 10 min. Apply THEN, NOT NOW; SHOW YOUR EVIDENCE; and DIGNITY. Students revise now. These checks belong inside DRAFT, not in another card or lesson.
- Every important claim has a traceable source detail or an honest uncertainty label.
- Students have removed hindsight and anachronism.
- They can defend how the real people are represented.
- The corrected plan travels into production with the sources.
No AI is needed. If students use it for wording, they must check every new historical detail and verify or remove it. AI cannot supply the historical judgement. Preserve uncertainty in the final wording and do not add a separate homework task to this worksheet.
